The Awakening Other Stories eBook Emma Meade
I received a copy of The Awakening & Other Stories as a complimentary copy for a read 2 review, this does not affect my honest review. The Awakening & Other Stories by Emma Meade was a collection of tasty morsels for my paranormal loving soul.
Yes, that sounded EXTREMELY cheesy. But its the truth. I love stories that have a slight eeriness to it, things go bump in the night, old houses that sigh with loneliness and history, characters that are just not quite right, one foot in this world and the one in the other...Whatever the other is I should say. This was a very satisfying treasure trove. I am doing an overall review of the entire collection, but then I will pull out three of my favorites, and those I will break down slightly more.
I speak a lot about description in my reviews, and the flow of the story, there are two reasons for that. One as a writer myself, I admire that ability, and I am attempting to learn how the author accomplished this. Then as a reader, it helps me fall more into the story; become fully consumed in the world the author is painting. It does not have to be large, expansive descriptions, it is more of the little things that makes the characters real and/or the situations more haunting. These small details helps me to identify either with the character or the story.
Emma Meade does that in this collection, her use of the English language as a tool, to paint scenarios that helps me to relate, is astounding. Small things that brought a slight chill to my spine, or had my soul sag a little for the characters saddness...examples such as in Ghost story when the two characters Jessica and Michelle venture into the old abandoned house and Ms. Meade describes the kitchen scene where she says" For some reason, the empty spaces where the cooker, fridge and washing machine should be gave her chills"....
I related to that, because I have seen that type of scenario in my real life, and it also sent a shiver, or I'm not sure, just an uneasiness through me as well. So seeing it here in this story, a feeling I have experienced, but could not set to words, help me to relate. It added another level to my reading of the stories, because moments likes these were sprinkled throughout.
Three that really grabbed me(I enjoyed the entire collection...I am only listing three that stood out to me personally)
#The Boy On The Beach: This story is about Katie who after losing her grandmother , makes a desperate attempt to contact her after her grandmother died. She actually accomplishes her goal, and finally gains an answer to a question that had been haunting her for years. But alone with the answer comes a warning, which if it occurs will change her reality forever. I really cannot say in-depth what happens, it will ruin the story, but I will say, that Ms.Meade was able to create a beautiful, fantasy and at the same time cause that fantasy to have a sinister overtone. This one left me slightly creeped out at what should have been beautiful.
#2 The Old Vampire: This story told of Hailey who was always a dreamer, basically residing in the reality of her books, even in her adult and senior years. Dreaming and dreaming of what she felt would be a perfect life, and letting all the other truly marvelous miracles of life pass her by. THIS one hit on a personal note, because I am one who enjoys stories; and I am a chronic dreamer of dreams ...which as a writer, I believe is simply the author's toolbox. But this story was a warning, to not allow time and small moments to pass by, waiting on that perfect detail, person or dream to come. Life is living every moment now, and writing your story daily. Yes, I got all of that from this story. I was also touched by the character's sadness, loneliness and then confusion and fear, when she was not careful and got what she asked for.
#1 End Of The Line: This story intrigued me from the beginning when only having seen an excerpt. The story of Cassie, a young woman who battled Chronic depression for most of her life; having numerous times, tried to commit suicide and failing. Cassie in this story is also back to the pattern of attempting to end it all and becoming frightened and stopping at the end. Until one night, while lying on the train tracks(her selected the method of ending it all) she meets a special train, with special people and stories, which causes Cassie to look at her true desires, and make the choice to either leave this life, or dig in and make the most of the gift she has been given...
This story touched me, because Cassie is like so many,; she does seems to have a good life, job, home, family that loves her, but still there is an aching sadness, a chronic discontent, which is more insidious than any disease. I believe Ms. Meade paints a believable character, which is also frightening, due to how common Cassie situation occurs.
This is a collection that will send shivers down your spine..so real life..with just a hint of Other.
I loved it and its a must read!

The Awakening Other Stories eBook Emma Meade Reviews
The Awakening & Other Stories is an exquisite collection of eight short stories with varied themes including ghosts, vampires, suicide, witches, Ouija boards, and demons. In "Ghost Story" Jessica confronts a ghost from her grandmother's past. In "The Awakening" Sabrina awakes from a vivid dream about a vampire. In "End of the Line" Cassie attempts suicide by train. In "Milsa Loris" the former inhabitants of the deserted town of Milsa Loris return to the ruined city for a ten year reunion; but what does the old witch Noraleen have planned? In "The Old Vampire" Hailey still dreams of a vampire lover. Who keeps knocking on Grandad's door in "The Knocking"? In "The Boy on the Beach" Kate's grandmother warns her from beyond the grave about the boy with the green eyes. In "Snowglobes" Eddie and Maggie visit Calvin's Cabins on Christmas Eve.
This collection is well-edited and a pleasure to read. My favorite story was "The Awakening". These are the kind of stories I wish I'd written. They are short, to the point, and beautifully and elegantly told. Somber and melancholy, they will haunt you for days to come. My only complaint is that I think this collection should be renamed End of the Line, not only because of the chosen cover art, but because each story has death (or at least life as we know it) as its underlying theme.
Warnings This book contains some coarse language, violence, and adult themes.
I received this book for the purposes of providing an honest review.
E-book copy provided by the author
Although a copy was provided by the author, it was not expected that I read it and review it. However, as it's fairly short, I managed to fit it in.
Can I say how much I enjoyed this book? Of course I can. I've read 'Under the Desert Moon' a YA novel by this, I believe, talented author, a story I very much enjoyed. However, I'm sticking my neck out here (hoping it's not chopped off) by saying that THESE type of stories are what I think is, or should be, Ms. Meade's niche. Every single one of them had that 'magic' touch... that awesome moment when you read a particular piece/line in the story that gives you goosebumps. And, every single one was as inventive and as good as the other. An absolute delight.
It's not often I manage to read something on the dark-ish side, but when I do, I'm absolutely enthralled by these type of stories. I'm no axe murderer, but my love of horror movies has followed suit with books, be they dark thrillers, horror or ghost stories. As far as 'The Awakening and Other Stories' is concerned, I'd finish one story, give it an hour or two, before I read the next one. I needed a clear head for what was to come next. These stories may be short, but what the author manages to do in each one really blew me away. So much so, it felt like I'd read a whole book in each story. How is that even possible? They're all cohesive, and conclusive. Quite an achievement as far as I'm concerned.
Although I loved every single one, and there are eight, I obviously have my favourites. So, I'll do a short mention on each, and then I'll tell you.
Ghost Story - Two friends, Jessica and Michelle are walking home with Jess's gran. Talk turns to the haunted house and the man who jumped. Everyone is curious as to why he did it. The girls, although warned by Jess's grandma to leave it alone paid no heed and return to investigate. What transpires between Jessica and the ghost is not so much eerie as it lovely and sad. The story came full circle with closure on Jessica's part.
The Awakening - Sabrina, who is apparently lost in a dream - another girl's dream - comes to realise that this isn't a dream at all. She wakes up somewhere she never expected to. There's a vast difference between dreams and reality. Scary!!
End of the Line - Just amazing. This one delves into depression, something I know first hand about, and one that chilled me to the bone. The 'Death Train'? Absolutely brilliant idea. WOW. I'm still thinking about this story, and its concept. Really? Loved it. This one alone gets five stars!
Milsa Loris - This city has seen too much tragedy and death, but an old witch by the name of Noraleen, decides that she must - before her time is up - save those she loves most; Milsa Loris's King, Queen, their only daughter, and those who've returned. She chooses to do this on the night where once a year festivities for this gathering take place. She needs to stop or halt something, but what?
The Old Vampire - Hailey was always a dreamer, from as young as she could remember. She dreamt about being the object of either monsters, vampires, ghosts - even demons or wicked sorcerer's. Throughout her life and in her dreams, she was sixteen forever. How does the saying go? Be careful what you wish for...
The Knocking - Alison is looking after her grandad, Paddy, who is riddled with arthritis among other things, basically driving her insane. He can't hear properly, seems to be spaced out most of the time and is living in his own world. Then, came the knocking. Alison, astounded and quite rattled, wants to know how often this has been happening. Suffice it to say that at some point in our lives, someone will come knocking for us, too.
The Boy on the Beach - Kate, sixteen, is on holiday with her father. Not too pleased about this event, because at this age kids believe they are too old to go on vacation with their parents. Really, there are better things they could be doing. So, gran used to dabble in tea leaf reading, left her a book before her passing and Kate decides to try make her own Ouija board. Why not? She just hopes she speaks to the right people. She does. She's also forewarned, but doesn't follow the 'forewarned, forearmed' and well, this is the outcome.
Snowglobes - Calvin works at his cabin, which he rents, six days a week. He has a passion for snowglobes of all different kinds, with each depicting something different. A young couple arrive for a stay; a couple who have been having a bit of a relationship set-back. Calvin can't bear to see young love end. As far as he's concerned, he believes that this couple is worth saving, so he sets about making this happen. You'll never guess how.
I know I've only touched on one or two things in each, but as they are short stories, I can't elaborate any further. If I did, I'd spoil them, and this isn't something I want to do.
As for my favourites, they are Snowglobes in fourth, The Awakening in third, Ghost Story in second and End of the Line in first. A whole book could be written on 'End of the Line'.
Emma, I have to give you props for this one. Please, please write more in this genre!! If you are looking for something to curl up with for an hour, or a day, give this book a try. It's one I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this year.
